Amazon announced a major expansion of its grocery delivery services on Wednesday, introducing same-day delivery of fresh food items to over 1,000 cities across the United States. This move allows customers to order perishable goods like dairy, meat, and seafood alongside their regular Amazon purchases, with plans to extend the service to 2,300 cities by the end of the year and additional locations in 2026. The new offering streamlines the shopping experience for customers, who previously had to navigate separate online stores, checkouts, and delivery fees when ordering from Amazon Fresh or Whole Foods Market.
Prime members in eligible locations will receive free same-day delivery on orders over $25, while non-Prime customers can use the service for a $12.99 fee without a minimum order requirement. Amazon piloted the service last year in Phoenix, Arizona, and this year in Orlando, Florida, and Kansas City, Missouri. The company reported strong customer adoption, with many first-time grocery buyers returning to shop twice as often compared to those who didn’t purchase perishable items.
Amazon expands same-day delivery
Neil Saunders, managing director and retail analyst at GlobalData Retail, expects the expansion to significantly boost Amazon’s market share in the food sector. He noted that the company’s extensive logistics network should enable profitable growth, a challenge that has plagued many online grocers.
CEO Andy Jassy expressed confidence in Amazon’s grocery division, which has undergone various strategies since the acquisition of Whole Foods in 2017. The company generated $100 billion in grocery sales last year, excluding Whole Foods Market and Amazon Fresh, with grocery items accounting for one out of every three units sold. Despite the success of online grocery delivery, Saunders pointed out that Amazon still aims to establish a stronger presence in physical grocery stores, as most food shopping continues to take place in-store.
However, the company faces challenges in developing a successful strategy for brick-and-mortar locations. The expansion of Amazon’s same-day fresh food delivery marks a significant step in the company’s ongoing efforts to dominate the grocery market and provide customers with a convenient, streamlined shopping experience.
