Canon is preparing to unveil a new addition to its Cinema EOS line on September 9, 2025, at 2 PM BST (11 PM AEST). A teaser posted on Canon’s Instagram hints at the reveal of this exciting new camera, rumored to be the Canon EOS C50. The teaser, captioned “Open your world to what’s next,” features a side-on silhouette of the upcoming camera.

The choice of words suggests that the new camera may support Open Gate video recording, a feature highly valued by filmmakers and content creators for its ability to utilize the entire sensor area, allowing for flexible cropping into any aspect ratio. This feature would be particularly notable as Canon has not offered Open Gate recording in its previous camera models.

Canon teases new Cinema EOS model

The Canon EOS C50 is expected to be a direct competitor to Sony’s FX3, boasting a 32MP full-frame sensor and weighing under 700g, excluding the lens and other attachments. This new model is anticipated to be a compact and versatile option for professional videographers and filmmakers. As part of the launch event, Canon fans can watch the unveiling live through an embedded YouTube video.

The launch is generating significant buzz, particularly among those eager for a lightweight cinema camera with enhanced video recording capabilities. Canon’s willingness to rival other industry leaders like Sony could mark an exciting transition in the market, especially with the introduction of Open Gate recording to its lineup. Stay tuned for detailed coverage on Canon’s new release and for more updates on what could be a groundbreaking addition for videographers and filmmakers alike.
