The game follows Atsu, a lone ronin who returns to her childhood home of Ezo (modern-day Hokkaido) to seek revenge on the Yotei Six.
These villains murdered her parents 16 years earlier. Erika Ishii voices Atsu, portraying a haunted young woman torn between her quest for vengeance and her inner peace.
To our dearest friends at @SuckerPunchProd, congratulations on the launch of Ghost of Yōtei! Aloy and Atsu share the fire, and today we share in celebrating your incredible achievement 💙🙌🐺

The game’s creative director, Jason Connell, says creating a new protagonist allowed the team to explore a different historical period while paying homage to the samurai genre.
The vast landscape of Hokkaido forms a striking backdrop for the game’s classical vengeance quest. This is reminiscent of samurai films by directors like Akira Kurosawa and Takeshi Miike. Players familiar with open-world games like Assassin’s Creed will find themselves at home in Ghost of Yotei.

The game encourages exploration, bounty hunting, and thrilling combat. Innovative elements like guiding wind directions replace traditional navigation markers, enhancing immersion.
A haunting quest for vengeance
Ghost of Yotei expands on the combat options from its predecessor. It introduces new weapons such as a spear and small bombs. This provides more variety and complexity in hand-to-hand fights.
The spear allows players to maintain distance from enemies, adding a strategic layer. The narrative is enriched by side stories and character interactions that build on Atsu’s life as a wandering mercenary. Notable subplots include a mission involving a man obsessed with playing music on a possibly cursed biwa.
There is also a haunting tale of a former general mourning her daughter. The game includes representation of the Ainu people, Ezo’s indigenous population. Though their role is respectfully presented, it remains largely inconsequential to the overall narrative.
Ghost of Yotei may not reach the narrative ambitions of titles like God of War or The Last of Us. However, its traditional revenge tale is executed with enough flair to entertain and surprise players. It delivers a memorable ode to samurai films and a rich, atmospheric adventure.
