Google has reversed its decision to discontinue support for all shortened goo.gl URLs on August 25th. While URLs that show a deactivation message will still stop working, all other goo.gl links will be preserved and continue to function as normal. Initially, when Google announced the August 25th deactivation deadline, the company cited declining traffic, stating that more than 99 percent of the URLs “had no activity in the last month.” However, in a recent update, Google acknowledged the extensive use of these links in various documents, videos, and posts, and expressed appreciation for the feedback received from users.
Google maintains support for goo.gl URLs
Users with goo.gl links are advised to check if their links display a warning message stating, “This link will no longer work in the near future.” If the warning appears, transitioning to another URL shortener is recommended. Links without such messages will continue to function normally.
This measured rollback aims to ensure that essential links embedded across various online content remain accessible, highlighting Google’s responsiveness to community feedback. For further updates, users are encouraged to visit Google’s official announcements and support pages.
