Grocery prices saw their biggest jump in nearly three years last month, a troublesome sign for inflation-weary shoppers.
Why it matters: The rise in food prices is part of a broader inflation trend affecting the costs of various goods and services, putting financial strain on consumers and changing their shopping behaviors.
By the numbers:
- Grocery inflation surged to an annual rate of 2.7% in August, the fastest pace in two years.
- Overall inflation increased to 2.9%, the highest level since January.
- Beef prices saw substantial increases, with steak prices surging by 16.6% and beef roasts rising by 13.6% compared to the same period last year.
- Coffee prices experienced a sharp rise of almost 21%.
Food industry analyst Phil Lempert attributes the rise in grocery prices to three primary factors: tariffs, climate change, and labor shortages.
The impact: A survey by The Associated Press and NORC found that 53% of people identified rising grocery prices as a significant source of stress.
- “We went to three different stores here in town and bought only items that were on sale,” says Shelia Fields, a retired nurse from Galveston, Texas. “We didn’t buy any meat because it’s just too high.”
- Rebecca White, a bank employee in Cincinnati, has noticed that her paycheck has not kept pace with rising grocery bills. “I stick to cheaper meals, which often aren’t healthy,” she says. “Sometimes I skip breakfast and just have lunch and dinner to save money.”
What’s next: Lempert warns that the U.S. should brace for shrinkflation, where manufacturers keep prices the same but reduce the size of items, meaning consumers pay more for the same amount. Grocers like Kroger are taking steps to manage cost increases and support shoppers by keeping prices as low as possible.

“Trump’s tariff chaos is driving up prices for Georgia families, as expected, while making jobs harder to find as businesses are paralyzed,” U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff said in a statement. “Stagflation is the risk and it’s hard to shake once it sets in.”https://t.co/iZSpsf8oPa

Americans are facing rising grocery costs — and Trump’s tariffs are to blame.
Trump promised to protect American farmers, workers, and families, but now, they're all footing the bill for his bad deals.https://t.co/BRwEi4gBjh

Donald Trump promised the American people one thing: lower grocery prices.
Instead, he and Sellout @EliseStefanik jacked up grocery prices with their tariff tax hikes.
They lied to New Yorkers’ faces. I’m fighting back to lower costs. https://t.co/Z4goHFKU32
