Nate is a 35-year-old man who lives in his parents’ basement. He finds himself transported to a mysterious mountain. To get home, he must reach the summit and make a wish.
Baby Steps is full of famously dangerous terrain like…a grazing field full of lambs.
We love games with lambs. 🐑

Nate is so awkward that he refuses help from other climbers. He turns down shoes, equipment, and a map. This makes the game much harder.
Baby Steps, the game I've been working on for 6 years with @gabecuzzillo and @maxiboch, is out on PC and PS5! We've put a feature-length film's worth of stupid cutscenes in this thing, and I hope you like them. But if not, you can skip them…. OR CAN YOU????

Players control Nate’s legs separately using the left and right triggers. It feels impossible at first but becomes satisfying once you get the rhythm. The game has a steep difficulty curve.
Bennett Foddy said Kojima's Death Stranding was "really inspirational" for him in creating Baby Steps, saying that it's basically an indie game wrapped in a big-budget cinematic narrative. https://t.co/m4QUV1Wmiz

Earlier areas have optional challenges for a tougher experience. These reward collectible hats and fruit that unlock new story content. Later levels are poorly designed.
Gaming’s trickster sage Bennett Foddy breaks down how Baby Steps is “AAA cosplay,” an homage and satire to the cinematic open world game , why we play them and what it says about us. It is struggle as insight. https://t.co/m4QUV1VOt1

awkward journey with bizarre challenges
It’s unclear where to go and any wrong step can make you fall to an earlier area. Some climbs seem unintended, like clinging to random bits of geometry.
Baby Steps is funny but makes the player the butt of the joke. It’s a game designed for streamers, more fun to watch than play yourself. Failure is frustrating for the player but entertaining for onlookers.
The visuals and music are surreal and bizarre. Nate encounters nude horse men that no one acknowledges. Bringing back hats triggers strange dream sequences.
The experimental sound effects are more annoying than melodic. Baby Steps is a truly unique experience that not everyone will enjoy. Struggling to climb and watching others fail can be funny to some.
But the frustrating gameplay may outweigh any creative appreciation for most players.
