The Pixel Phone app is receiving a noteworthy update that introduces call recording and integration with Android Auto, along with an international expansion of its features.

Why it matters: Google is officially rolling out call recording to all countries where Pixel is supported, acknowledging it as a fundamentally useful tool. The update also focuses on expanding Google’s calling features internationally, enhancing the usability of the Pixel Phone app while broadening its accessibility to a global audience.

The details:

  • Call recording will be available on Pixel 6 and newer models, especially for devices that do not support the more advanced Call Notes functionality.
  • Users will soon be able to access Call Screen from their cars via Android Auto, enhancing hands-free call management.
  • Call Screen will be available in Australia, Canada, and Ireland, while a beta version of Manual Call Screen will be introduced in India, starting with English and Hindi.
  • Google recapped the introduction of Magic Cue and Voice Translate on the Pixel 10, as well as the Take a Message feature, designed to create a more intuitive and user-friendly experience.

A Pixel 8 Pro user in India has shared a video demonstrating the new native call recording feature in action.

How it works:

  • The feature operates through the Call Assist menu, offering playback, sharing, and deletion options in the Phone app.
  • Both parties receive a notification that the call is being recorded, and recordings are stored locally on the device with the option to delete automatically after a specified duration.
  • Call recording is currently limited to Pixel 6 and later models running Android 14 or higher and is available only in regions where the feature is supported.

What’s next: These updates are part of Google’s ongoing efforts to enhance the Pixel Phone app experience and expand its features to a wider global audience. Further country expansions are anticipated later, with the feature predominantly observed in India and reported by a reader in Canada so far.
