On Nielsen and Netflix, while digital viewer tracking will be inherently more precise than over-the-air viewer tracking, it’ll only be incrementally more so. The problem isn’t solved.
This new partnership – and those like it – will not be completely precise because the tracking data will not reliably reflect information about the number of people, and their particulars, actually viewing the content. Viewing spaces are typically highly organic and that will continue to vex and fuzzy-up the math.
This is probably so obvious as not to warrant a mention in the podcast, but I find it a remaining challenge for the likes of Nielsen, Netflix, et al. Because it’s digital on both ends (digital sounds so precise, doesn’t it?), that doesn’t mean it’s an accurate reflection of reality. There exist arguably nefarious solutions to this problem, but they’re just that.
