If a lucky ticket holder matches all the numbers in the next draw, they will face a choice between receiving the prize as 30 annual installments or a lump sum cash payout of $258.8 million.
Most winners historically opt for the lump sum option.

Choosing the lump sum would result in an initial payout of $196.7 million after the mandatory 24% federal withholding tax. The winner could face a federal marginal tax rate of up to 37%, further reducing the prize to around $163 million.
The annuity option would provide the winner with approximately $18.8 million per year.

Massive Powerball jackpot reaches $565 million
After the 37% federal marginal tax rate, the annual payment would be about $11.8 million.
State taxes may also apply, with rates varying by state. The odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are incredibly slim at 1 in 292.2 million. The Mega Millions lottery, with a jackpot of $198 million, has slightly better odds of 1 in 290.4 million.
This year’s previous record jackpot was won by a California ticket buyer in March. The largest Mega Millions jackpot of 2025 so far was $349 million, claimed by an Illinois resident. The upcoming Powerball and Mega Millions draws are highly anticipated.
The massive jackpots continue to capture public attention and fuel dreams of instant wealth, despite the astronomical odds.
