NASA’s SPHEREx (Spectro-Photometer for the History of the Universe, Epoch of Reionization and Ices Explorer) has recently observed the interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS from August 7 to August 15. This mission aims to capture crucial data about objects traveling through our solar system from the vast reaches of space. Interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS, first discovered in the summer of 2025, is a rare visitor from outside our solar system.

NASA's SphereX space telescope was designed to map distant stars and galaxies. But it recently seized an opportunity to examine the new interstellar comet, 3I/ATLAS.

As it makes its fleeting passage, a coalition of NASA missions is taking advantage of the opportunity to gather as much information as possible before the comet heads back into the cosmic dark. The SPHEREx team has been diligently analyzing the insights gathered during the observation period.

Interstellar comet data insights

Initial results from this data promise to enhance our understanding of the comet’s size, physical properties, and chemical makeup. These details are vital for advancing the broader mission of tracking and understanding solar system objects. NASA’s comprehensive network of space telescopes plays a critical role in this effort.

Regardless of anyone’s conclusion, Avi’s analysis is interesting and it’s incredible to keep challenging what we know and how far we have come in science. https://t.co/1wq22Rewy2

While comet 3I/ATLAS poses no threat to Earth, the data gathered supports NASA’s ongoing mission to find, track, and study similar objects within our solar system, thereby advancing our knowledge and potentially safeguarding our planet. This analysis marks a significant step forward in our journey to understand the complexities of the universe. The SPHEREx mission exemplifies NASA’s commitment to exploring the unknown, innovating for humanity’s benefit, and inspiring the world through discovery.
