The Boring Company, owned by Elon Musk, has announced plans to build the “Music City Loop,” a privately funded underground transportation system in Nashville, Tennessee.
Why it matters: The project aims to alleviate Nashville’s growing traffic congestion and provide a high-speed transit option connecting downtown, the Convention Center, and Nashville International Airport.
The details:
- The Music City Loop will be constructed beneath state-owned roadways and will not rely on public funding.
- The system will use all-electric vehicles in dedicated tunnels and is designed to meet or exceed federal fire and safety standards.
- The estimated travel time from downtown to the airport is eight minutes.
- Construction is set to begin immediately following the necessary approvals, with the first phase expected to open in fall 2026.
The announcement initiates a public engagement and evaluation process to determine final routes and gather community input.
What they’re saying:
- “I know our engineering team was looking down — two years!” remarked Doug Kreulen, CEO of the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority, with a tone of skepticism.
- Steve Davis, president of The Boring Company, stated that Nashville was selected for its need for efficient transportation and its welcoming community.
- Nashville Mayor Freddie O’Connell commented, “We are aware of the state’s conversations with The Boring Company, and we have a number of operational questions to understand the potential impacts on Metro and Nashvillians.”
The other side: While The Boring Company has made similar promises in other cities, including Chicago, Los Angeles, and Washington, DC, many of those projects were either canceled or postponed.
What’s next: The Boring Company plans to begin hiring for the Music City Loop project immediately, and the public engagement process will help finalize the routes and plans for the initial 10-mile phase.
