Twitter and IBM Watson come Together Against Abuse – By Carolina Milanesi
Twitter has had a history of abuse and bullying for most of its life but it seems the negative trend has escalated over the past year and management has struggled to keep up on their fight against it. Last year, Twitter announced an expanded mute feature that allowed users to silence accounts they do not want to see, including in notifications. A more direct way to report abuse was also implemented.
This week, during IBM’s InterConnect conference, Chris Moody, Twitter’s VP of data strategy, announced they were teaming up with IBM to use their AI platform, Watson, to help the fight against abuse. Watson understands tone, language nuance, and intention which can all help in understanding abuse early and stop it by identifying accounts engaging in abusive behavior even if they have not been flagged.
This is not the first time Twitter has collaborated with IBM to analyze its data to improve the service. Back in 2015, Twitter used Watson to help extract relevant business insights from the feed. Using IBM’s AI platform to analyze conversations, Twitter could gain insights such as geographical location of where a particular Twitter trend originated.
I mentioned in my article on Mobile World Congress of trying a demo at the IBM booth where Watson was used to analyze my Twitter account. Using its tone and personality analyzer on my account, Watson was able to light up the cognitive dress that was on display. The demo was limited and somewhat harmless as it focused on determining whether I was joyful, passionate, excited, curious or encouraging. But you can easily see how AI could help Twitter analyze data to highlight accounts that might be the source of abuse. Watson does not stop at tone and personality. It can analyze text to extract meta-data from content that ranges from keywords to emotion to relations and sentiment. It is easy to understand how analyzing conversations, as well as content such as pictures and shared video, Watson could deliver a pretty accurate read of tone and analyze, not just abusive users, but also when a conversation might be escalating to abuse.
Only an AI engine would be able to analyze the amount of data generated on Twitter every day in a timely manner. Of course, as much as AI might seem like magic, it is not. How successful Watson will be in finding and preventing abuse on Twitter will depend on what it has been trained to look for. Is it sarcasm, not abuse, because it sounds like a joke? How can we make sure any AI platform is sensitive to all genders, races, religions, political affiliations, and sexual orientations so it will know what to look for?
Deep learning is using information from our collective mind to train the AI brain that will, in future, automatically be able to make decisions about what is considered abuse. How confident are we that our current biases are not trickling into the training to determine what is and isn’t sexism, racism, or any other form of abuse? I am certainly not convinced and would like to better understand how we can assure it does not happen. When discussing AI, there is a lot of talk about laws and regulations but not enough about human emotions and empathy in particular.
Intel Creates AI Organization – By Bob O’Donnell
Chip giant Intel announced a new organizational structure that pulls together several different initiatives, products, and research around Artificial Intelligence into a single group being led by former Nervana CEO Naveen Rao. The new group, which will report directly to CEO Bryan Krzanich, is intended to focus all of Intel’s various AI efforts into a single cohesive vision the company can leverage across R&D, engineering, silicon, and software.
The move by Intel is just the latest of many the company has taken recently to diversify its focus and make clear to the industry (and investors) it wants to stay at the leading edge of computing applications. AI is clearly going to be a key issue for a long time to come and Intel is making this strategic adjustment to try and maximize its effectiveness and influence in the burgeoning new field.
By combining engineering efforts across several different chip architectures—including the Nervana-branded dedicated AI silicon efforts—as well as traditional x86 and Altera FPGA technologies, Intel has the potential to make a significant impact on AI. Of course, how this concept will be implemented in reality and what effect it will have, remains to be seen. Conceptually, however, the new organization makes a great deal of sense and positions Intel nicely to take an important position in the field of AI.
It’s particularly important for Intel because some of the key applications of AI are expected to be areas Intel has already announced they intend to focus on, including autonomous driving, IoT, healthcare and more. It’s also interesting because Intel is one of the few companies pushing several different types of chip architectures to be used in AI. Clearly, not all AI applications will be the same nor require the same kind of computing requirements. So, by offering a range of different options suited to different types of tasks, the company could become a more attractive provider for potential partners.
To execute well on that vision, Intel will really need to leverage the software assets it acquired as part of Nervana and figure out how to combine it with any existing software that may have been created in other groups. As with any merger, the devil will be in the details of how those assimilation efforts move forward but the possibilities are intriguing.
Samsung Unveils Bixby Assistant Ahead of Galaxy S8 Reveal Next Week – By Jan Dawson
In a somewhat unusual move, Samsung unveiled the Bixby assistant that will debut on its Galaxy S8 phone next week separately from that phone launch event. It describes Bixby as less a fully-fledged assistant and more a new way to interact with your phone.
That positioning feels like it could be something of a double-edged sword. On the one hand, many virtual assistants over-promise and under-deliver, offering to become the digital equivalent of personal assistants but falling short on many basic tasks, as well as operating inconsistently based on noise levels, connectivity, and various other factors. As such, it might in some ways be smart for Samsung to position Bixby more narrowly, with a very well-defined set of features. The fact Bixby promises to do whatever you can do through touch in the apps that support it overcomes a key problem with assistants, which is uncertainty over their capabilities. Assuming Bixby works as advertised, users shouldn’t be confused about what it can do within the apps which integrate it.
On the other hand, the fact Bixby is limited to only those apps that officially support it mean it’s much more limited than the competing assistants which offer system-level functionality, working the same regardless of the app currently in use (or whether an app is in use at all). Given that almost no third party apps will support it out of the box, users will have to choose between using Bixby, with its mix of a strong feature set in some cases and zero functionality in others, or the Google Assistant which will likely also be offered on the S8 and which will operate much more along the lines users are accustomed to.
The other thing worth noting about Bixby is it was built entirely organically by Samsung. In other words, it doesn’t yet have any features from the Viv team Samsung acquired last year. I suspect the lack of Viv-based features and relatively limited functionality is why Samsung chose to announce it separately from the S8 launch – it might have been a somewhat deflating announcement in the context of a flashy device launch. But with this announcement – and the clarification about the lack of Viv integration – out of the way a week early, Samsung can hopefully focus on hardware and other feature announcements to get better press next week.
