Xiaomi unveiled its 17 series smartphones, directly challenging Apple’s iPhone 17 with a dual-screen design and cutting-edge specs at a lower price point.

Why it matters: Xiaomi is aggressively targeting the premium smartphone segment, aiming to capture market share from Apple while showcasing its broader ambitions in EVs and chipmaking.

The details:

  • The Xiaomi 17 Pro and Pro Max feature a second screen on the back for notifications, selfies, and gaming.
  • Prices start at 4,499 yuan ($631) for the base model, undercutting the iPhone 17 by over $100.
  • The phones are powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip and boast large L-shaped batteries up to 7,500 mAh.
  • Xiaomi skipped the 16 series to align its model numbers with Apple’s annual releases.

Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun emphasized the company’s transformation over the past five years, highlighting its expansion into electric vehicles and mobile processors.

What they’re saying:

  • “We’ve undergone a profound transformation over the past five years and today a completely new Xiaomi stands firmly in front of a new era,” said Lei Jun.
  • Bloomberg Intelligence notes that Xiaomi’s EV segment could be its main sales-growth driver, potentially contributing 10-15% of the company’s profit by 2026.

The other side: Apple currently dominates the premium smartphone market, controlling 62% of global sales for handsets costing $600 or more, while Xiaomi holds just a single-digit share.

What’s next: Xiaomi plans to ramp up EV production, start selling its first car in Europe by 2027, and invest at least $7 billion into developing its own mobile processors.
