Techpinions is a leading technology analysis and commentary platform that provides insightful perspectives on the ever-evolving world of technology. Founded by industry veterans with decades of combined experience, we bridge the gap between complex technological developments and practical understanding for business leaders, investors, and technology enthusiasts.
Techpinions has been publishing analysis of the technology industry since 2011.
Our Mission
We believe that technology should be accessible, understandable, and meaningful. Our mission is to deliver thoughtful analysis that cuts through the noise of tech hype and provides clear, actionable insights about the technologies that are shaping our future.
What We Do
We are an opinion and analysis publication. We don’t break news — we argue about what the news means. When a company announces a product, posts earnings, or files to go public, the question we’re interested in is what it tells you about where the industry is going.
Industry Analysis: We provide deep-dive analysis on emerging technologies, market trends, and industry shifts across sectors including consumer electronics, enterprise software, artificial intelligence, automotive technology, and digital transformation.
Expert Commentary: Our team of seasoned analysts offers informed opinions on product launches, corporate strategies, regulatory developments, and market dynamics that impact the technology landscape.
Strategic Insights: We help business leaders understand how technological changes affect their industries, customers, and competitive positioning through detailed research and strategic recommendations.
Market Intelligence: Our comprehensive coverage includes earnings analysis, competitive assessments, and forward-looking perspectives on technology adoption and market evolution.
Our History
Techpinions was founded in 2011 as an invite-only platform for technology industry analysts. Over the years it has published columns from working industry analysts and researchers, and produced a long-running podcast featuring analysts including Ben Bajarin, Tim Bajarin, Carolina Milanesi, and Bob O’Donnell.
How it started
Techpinions launched in June 2011, started by Ben Bajarin, then a principal analyst at Creative Strategies and a technology columnist for Time.
The premise was slightly contrarian. Industry analysts sell their thinking to clients; they don’t usually publish it. Writing on the site’s third anniversary, Ben described the gap he was trying to fill: he had been frustrated by the lack of critical thinking in public discussion of technology, and he wanted to put together a team to bring real perspective to it rather than go it alone.
So the model was a collective, and admission was by invitation. Contributors were selected against a deliberately strict standard — people with credible, original, informed views on the industry, which in practice meant working analysts, technology executives, and authors rather than general-assignment writers.
Who has written here
Over the years the masthead included some of the most experienced analysts in the business.
Tim Bajarin has led Creative Strategies since 1981 and was among the first analysts to cover the personal computer industry. He wrote long-running columns for PC Magazine and Time, appeared on Computer Chronicles, and is credited with predicting the desktop publishing revolution three years before it arrived. His consulting work has spanned IBM, Apple, Xerox, Compaq, Dell, AT&T, and Microsoft.
Carolina Milanesi brought more than two decades of analyst experience to the site. She is now President and Principal Analyst at Creative Strategies and the founder of The Heart of Tech.
Bob O’Donnell, president of TECHnalysis Research, co-hosted the Techpinions podcast for years alongside Ben Bajarin, with regular appearances from Carolina Milanesi and Tim Bajarin. The show ran weekly and went well past the headlines on the stories that mattered.
Jan Dawson wrote a regular column through to the end of 2017.
Steve Wildstrom wrote for Techpinions in the last years of his career. He had spent decades at BusinessWeek, where his “Technology & You” column ran from 1972 until the magazine’s sale to Bloomberg. He died in November 2015.
Who writes here today
David Graff is the new editor-in-chief of Techpinions, where he writes about artificial intelligence, consumer devices, and the technology markets. His recent work has covered brain-computer interface startups reaching market ahead of Neuralink, OpenAI’s move into consumer financial services, and the concentration of venture funding among a handful of firms.
The archive
Fifteen years of that work is still online and still readable. Ben Bajarin’s 2011 columns on Nokia’s prospects and the death of Microsoft’s Courier tablet are where the archive begins; his piece from December of that year on why everything comes down to the digital ecosystem is still turning up as a cited reference in academic work on the subject.
