The highly anticipated sequel to Ghost of Tsushima, Ghost of Yōtei, is set to release on October 2nd for the PlayStation 5. Developed by Sucker Punch, the game follows the story of Atsu, a warrior seeking revenge against the Yōtei Six, a group of outlaws who killed her family when she was young. After barely surviving the attack, Atsu left her island home of Ezo and spent 16 years training to become a skilled fighter.

Now, she returns to Ezo with a clear goal: to hunt down and kill each member of the Yōtei Six, and ultimately, herself. The game’s structure revolves around this theme of revenge, allowing players to approach each target in almost any order they choose. Most of the player’s actions, from gathering clues at local taverns to learning new weapon techniques, contribute to this overarching goal.

Ghost of Yōtei builds upon its predecessor by refining gameplay elements and taking advantage of the PS5’s capabilities to deliver stunning visuals. The game features epic samurai duels set in breathtaking locations, such as burning buildings, rain-drenched mountaintops, and snow-covered fields with golden leaves. Side quests have also been improved, offering a variety of tones and gameplay styles.

Atsu’s quest for revenge

Some involve investigative elements, while others are humorous, like a series of quests about a hapless would-be samurai determined to defeat Atsu. The game balances its bloody and violent combat with moments of calm and reflection.

Atsu can relax at hot springs, cook food, and play the shamisen by the fire, providing a welcome respite from the intense action. Combat is a highlight of the game, particularly when fighting a few enemies or powerful foes. The swordplay is strategic and nuanced, requiring patience and skill.

However, larger battles can sometimes devolve into button-mashing, and the game’s frequent attacks by bounty hunters and outlaws can become tedious and discourage exploration. Despite these minor flaws, Ghost of Yōtei delivers a refined gameplay experience and a cinematic story that PlayStation owners have come to expect. The game has already garnered impressive review scores, with an 87/100 average on Metacritic and an 88 Top Critics average on OpenCritic, surpassing its predecessor.

For eager fans, the game is available for pre-load on the PlayStation Store, allowing players to download the approximately 85 GB file before the official release date. Ghost of Yōtei is shaping up to be a must-play for fans of samurai action-adventure games, offering a compelling protagonist, breathtaking visuals, and satisfying combat.
