Google unveiled its latest Pixel devices and AI updates at the annual “Made by Google” event, showcasing advancements in on-device AI and hardware.

Why it matters: The new Pixel lineup and AI features aim to provide users with a more personalized, proactive, and efficient smartphone experience, reducing the need to switch between multiple apps to complete tasks.

The details:

  • The Pixel 10 series, including the Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, and Pixel 10 Pro XL, incorporate the new Tensor G5 chip, bringing numerous AI capabilities to enhance user experiences.
  • The Pixel Watch 4 features a domed Actua 360 display, extended battery life, and standalone satellite communication capabilities, along with new fitness features and expanded AI.
  • The Pixel 10 Pro Fold boasts a gearless hinge design, a larger display, an upgraded battery, and impressive AI features.
  • The Pixel Buds 2a bring high-quality sound and advanced features at a competitive price point.

Google also announced new Qi2-compatible accessories, photography and AI enhancements, updates to Gemini Live and Google Photos, and a partnership with Stephen Curry to develop products aimed at enhancing performance and usability.

What’s new: Magic Cue, a groundbreaking AI-driven feature powered by Google’s Gemini Nano AI model and Tensor G5 chip, analyzes current tasks and provides actionable suggestions, reducing the need to search and switch between apps.

The big picture: The Pixel 10, with its AI-enhanced features, paves the way for more intuitive and efficient smartphone use, highlighting the future of mobile technology dominated by AI-powered interfaces.

What they’re saying:

  • “A lot of what smartphones do is help store information for us, but it’s up to us to remember where to find it. That whole process can be deceptively tedious.” – Tyler Kugler, Group Product Manager leading the Pixel AI team
  • “Now it feels like we’re going back to that one place, but a much more capable place, which would be your preferred AI agent.” – Carolina Milanesi, principal analyst for Creative Strategies
  • “I do see a future without apps, where AI is the driving operating system and the user doesn’t need to switch between apps to perform tasks.” – Nabila Popal, IDC

What’s next: The Pixel 10 devices will launch on August 28, with Magic Cue and other AI-enhanced features set to transform the smartphone user experience. However, it remains to be seen if these advancements will be enough to convince users to upgrade their devices.
