Koei Tecmo has confirmed that Dynasty Warriors Origins will run at a fixed 30 frames per second on the Nintendo Switch 2. The game’s director, Tomohiko Sho, explained this decision during the Tokyo Game Show 2025. Sho stated that while the Switch 2 is capable of running the game at 60 FPS, it would require reducing the number of soldiers on the battlefield to levels seen in previous Dynasty Warriors titles.
“The Switch 2 version is set to a fixed 30 FPS, and stable operation is a priority in development,” Sho said. He further elaborated, “Because it’s a great piece of hardware, I think it would be possible to display it at 60 FPS if we reduced the number of soldiers to the same level as in previous Dynasty Warriors games. However, for this game, we believe it’s best to have thousands of soldiers and play at a stable 30 FPS.”
The decision to prioritize a stable frame rate over a higher but potentially unstable one has sparked debate among fans.
Fixed frame rate for stable gameplay
Some have expressed disappointment at the lack of a 60 FPS option, while others appreciate the commitment to a smooth gameplay experience. This issue highlights the ongoing discussion in modern gaming about the importance of technical specifications versus overall enjoyment.
Many gamers who grew up in the 16-bit era recall a time when engaging gameplay was the primary focus, rather than performance metrics like frame rates. As the release date for Dynasty Warriors Origins on the Switch 2 approaches, more details about the game’s performance and features are expected. For now, the development team believes that opting for stability best serves the game, given the hardware constraints and the goal of delivering a seamless experience with a large number of on-screen characters.
Dynasty Warriors Origins is set to launch on the Nintendo Switch 2 on January 22, 2026.
