Igor Babuschkin, a co-founder of xAI, announced he is leaving the company to start his own venture firm called Babuschkin Ventures. The new firm will focus on supporting AI safety research and investing in startups working on AI and agentic systems. Babuschkin helped launch xAI with Elon Musk in 2023.
In a post, he shared that his decision to leave stems from a desire to advance research that can “advance humanity and unlock the mysteries of our universe.”
During his time at xAI, Babuschkin played a key role in the company’s achievements. This included building out its engineering teams and overseeing the development of the Memphis supercluster. The supercluster processes data and trains the models that power xAI’s Grok chatbot.

Babuschkin reflected on the intense early days of xAI and the lessons he learned from working closely with Musk. “I learned two priceless lessons from Elon: be fearless in rolling up your sleeves to personally dig into technical problems, and have a maniacal sense of urgency,” he wrote.
He recounted a defining memory from a late night near a project deadline when issues hit the training setup. Musk flew to the data center himself to work alongside the team until the problem was resolved. “When the training run finally worked, our triumph at ‘4:20 a.m.’ causing us to laugh out loud,” Babuschkin noted.
Musk thanked Babuschkin in a post on social media platform X, stating, “We wouldn’t be here without you.”
Prior to his role at xAI, Babuschkin worked as a research engineer for DeepMind and was a member of OpenAI’s technical staff. He graduated from Technical University of Dortmund in Germany.
