Google Drive for Android is rolling out a Material 3 Expressive redesign, introducing a new search app bar component and a continuous list or grid view of files.
Why it matters: This update aligns Google Drive with Google’s latest design language, aiming to enhance user experience and functionality.
The details:
- The search app bar now places the hamburger button and profile picture outside the field, which is thicker than before.
- A “Search in Drive” hint appears after the “Google Drive” wordmark animates out.
- Files are placed in one large container, slightly darker than the background, in either a continuous list or grid view.
- The top tap indicator in the Files tab has been made smaller, and a toggle to switch between list and grid views has been introduced.
Users are seeing elements of this Material 3 Expressive redesign with version 2.25.310.0 of Google Drive for Android, though the rollout is not yet widespread.
Some users are only seeing a few of the new components.
What’s next: More Google apps, such as Google Contacts and Phone by Google, are expected to receive the Material 3 Expressive makeover in the near future.
